Finished Sketches for posters 2 and 3

I just finished some sketch out ideas for the remaining posters in the series. Second one is basically worked out. The third one is in it's early stages. I am hoping to get that worked out in the next couple of days.

Ironforge. This image is of the inside of the cave (that is the city) and of molten iron pouring down from the ceiling.

The general color scheme of that poster.

This early sketch of Stormwind is very rough and gives the overall sense of what I am looking for though it is not very detailed.

The general color scheme for that poster.

Poster Image

This image is what I have completed and merged together. The background is just test coloring until I get the correct one in. I also need to shift the image a little to have more negative space on the left hand side.

Poster Thus Far

I had a lot of personal matters come up this weekend and week. So I have not had time to prefect what I have done yet. I got each image scanned in at 300 dpi. I then took each of them and colored them within Photoshop. I also removed the lines, because it is not with in the styling to have them. I then took those files and placed them inside of Illustrator and live traced them using the 3-color option. I then made adjustments according. I liked the fact that each layer was scanned in at a different time I was able to figure out what I needed to change for my imagery to work better. It also allowed for better placement and last minute adjustments. I am still unhappy with the background illustration.

The water line. I am still happy with this.

The background detail. This part I really like how it turned out.
The clouds that are near the tree, they need a bit of touching up still.

The sky that is in the processes of reworking.

The focal point. This I am really happy about.

Poster 1 Line Art, Teldrassil

Worked on the line art for my first poster tonight. I have it all separated. I will just need to combined one I get high res scans done of each piece.

Poster art for Teldrassil.

I decided it might work better for me to work in layers then having one solid image. This way if I did not like how something looked once inside of illustrator, I would be able to change it very easily.  I started with my main image of the tree and moved through the foreground and finished with background.

For the final line art I drew much more inspiration from classic WPA posters and I also took a little more create license on the World of Warcraft portion.

Below is the image of the tree stump. I wanted this image to be easily recognized by people who do not have a knowledge of World of Warcraft, so I made it look a little bit like a mountain.  Took quiet some time to develop properly.

Below are images of the close up clouds. I wanted these clouds stylized a little more then the ones in the background, mostly I wanted to reflect the stylization seen from the Night Elves, the race of people who rule over Teldrassil.

Here is what the background will look like, well the water and the sky background. This was basically inspired by WPA posters of national parks. I was a little worried about how the water would turn out and I was quiet happy with its final.

The overlay is used to represent the village and trees growing on the outside of the tree. I did these with a lack of detail to reflect how the WPA posters often have foreground images that are solid colored, and to help keep the viewers eyes focused on the main portion of the image.

I am going to take these and layer them in photoshop/illustrator I will post an image of them once they are mixed together.

General Font Ideas

I decided that I will be making posters for each of the major cities, but not the city itself but rather a location in the city to visit. The idea behind the posters is that they would be hung in the world. I would like to add in a little extra flare by having the poster written in the native languages.

I went searching this evening for a way to translate a fake language. I was unable to find what I was looking for so I relied heavely upon the games translation mechanics.

Common
Mage Tower, The Great Forge, Teldrassil, Gnomeregan, and Tinker Town
Gnomish
Rune Tiras, Zah Modan Thros, Vustrangin, Mosgodunan, Rugosh Dani
Darnassian
Aman Adore, Dor Shari Ishnu, Isera'duna, Thero'shan, Ethala Mush
Dwarvish
Rand Gimil, Eft Frean Weard, Angor-magi, Hoga-modan, Rugosh Loch

Overall I was happy with what I have found, next text styles will be looked for.

Sketch Work

I sketch out this, kinda the feel I am going for. Color tests, will follow soon. Just need to fully flush out my coloring.

The City of Darnassus

So I believe that I have decided to do the 3 major cities of the Alliance; Stormwind, Ironforge, and Darnassus. This blog entry will focus on the city in which the night elves belong called Darnassus.

Some history of the city, here! This will provide a brief incite into the location.  I am going to focus on the idea that their city is literally held within a giant tree.

Here, is a link for some more trivia about the city. Just to get the ideas flowing.

I explored the city within the game and took some screen shots for overall idea of how the structures look and the general coloring of the city.

Seen when you portal in

 Protector of the city

The city center

Gates to the city

Outer wall to the city

 Lake and Architecture

The growing tree that contains Darnassus

City map showing the general coloring of the city. Also shows different portions of the city.

I than went to kuler and developed a color set that I thought represented the city. I do not have it containing a green at the moment I do plan on adding one just debating on what color I should get rid of first.

I am planning on doing something very similar to these classic designs.

I feel like all of these classic images focus on a more vertical design. and they embody what I am kinda looking for with this project.

Gaming poster Update Number

I am still having some issues flushing out ideas for my first major step. I have taken the time and explored many different places online, to draw some inspiration. I have decided to make travel posters for the game World of Warcraft. I am still debating on the two different factions of the game. I will either focus on the Alliance of the Horde, and their 3 original cities. Each poster will have the name of the town and a small phrase at the bottom that reflects the city itself. The phrase will be understood by the games players more then people outside of the game. I will be posting some some inspiration for the 2 factions while I continue my inner debate.

Zelda Poster

I saw this simplistic Zelda poster and really enjoyed the simplicity of the style.

Project 1 Idea

I have always found WPA Posters amazing. The simple vector art is amazing. For some time now I have thought about making my own series of travel posters in this style. I like the idea of mixing these with pop culture items.  For my first project I was thinking of making a series of WPA travel posters for a video game. I currently am still coming up with ideas for different games and am narrowing down the long list.
